Leitrim Genealogy Centre, Find Your Roots in Ireland

About Us

Leitrim Genealogy Centre was set up in 1986 to deal with enquiries from people who wished to trace their Leitrim ancestry. We are the official genealogy service for County Leitrim, are part of the Irish Family History Foundation's network of Centres throughout Ireland and we provide a full time professional genealogy service for County Leitrim.

The difficulty faced by many people who travelled from many lands to trace their Leitrim ancestors was that source material was scattered throughout the County and elsewhere. In the years since our foundation we have been collecting, indexing and computerising all the major sources for family history research, work that continues at present.

The main sources we use are:-
    - Pre 1900 Church records of baptism, marriage and death
    - Civil records of birth, marriage and death
    - Gravestone inscriptions
    - Tithe Books (1833)
    - Griffiths Valuation(1857)
    - 1901 Census
    - 1911 Census

There are other records indexed, some of these sources may not be relevant in particular cases as records vary from parish to parish. Research is done at our Centre by experienced researchers who know the County and its sources in great detail.

Genealogical research is a time consuming process. From original assessment to comprehensive Family History Report normally takes about twelve weeks. Obviously seasonal demand can increase this waiting period, so we always recommend initiating your research in good time, well in advance of a planned visit to Co. Leitrim and especially if it is for a special occasion.

We also have a Retail Outlet containing publications, CD's, DVD's etc, of local interest.
